Monthly film nights at Picnic

We are excited to announce our monthly film nights are now in full swing.

We started off with the film ‘Gandolfi- Family Business’. Shot on 16mm Kodachrome, this documentary has been overlooked for too long. It’s a quiet masterpiece of composition, colour and storytelling. In 1982, the oldest living plate camera makers, Fred and Arthur Gandolfi, decided to close their family business in Peckham, London after almost 100 years of business. This is the story of the two brothers as they enter retirement, but more than anything it’s a story of their relationship. Each makes one aspect of the camera in their two room workshop, but they rarely interact. Directed by photographer Ken Griffiths and his brother David. 90mins.

Our next film will be Utama by Alejandro Loayza Grisi. Showing on Saturday 6th July. Book your tickets here!

In the arid Bolivian highlands, Utama follows an elderly Quechua couple who have been living the same daily routine for years. When an uncommonly long drought threatens their entire way of life, Virginio and Sisa must decide whether to stay and maintain their traditional way of life or admit defeat and move in with family members in the city. When their grandson arrives with news it brings their predicament into sharp focus as they confront climate change, the value of tradition, and the meaning of life. This visually jaw-dropping debut feature by photographer-turned-filmmaker Alejandro Loayza Grisi is shot by award-winning cinematographer Barbara Alvarez.
